MAUERFALL 2009

Celebrating the fall of the Berlin Wall, 20 years ago in 1989.

In November 2009 Tim Davies took part in the "Mauerfall 2009" event in Berlin, painting a 2.5 meter high Domino, that, together with 1000 other Dominos created a Domino-Effect through the centre of Berlin and celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

On November 09 2009 in Berlin, over 1000 giant dominos painted by a worldwide collaboration of artists were toppled to create a “domino effect” running along the original route of the Berlin Wall from the Brandenburg Gate to Potsdammerplatz. Many world figures, politicians and figures prominent at the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 were at the Brandenburg Gate on the evening of November 9th 2009 to witness the "DominoAktion." Among those in attendance were:

  • German Chancellor Angela Merkel
  • French President Nicolas Sarkozy
  • British Premier Gordon Brown
  • Russian President Dmitri Medvedev
  • US Secretary Of State Hillary Clinton
  • Former Russian President, Mikhail Gorbachev
  • Polish President Lech Walesa

Those present in Berlin watched the event on giant 300m2 LED video walls as live coverage by the BBC and CNN beamed the event to a worldwide audience. Each domino is 2.5m high, 1m wide and 40 cms deep and is made from canvas str;etched over a wooden frame with a solid polystyrene body. Artists from around the world have decorated these impressive blocks with images following the themes of "Freedom," the struggle against tyranny and the ultimate fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
